Making an Index: How?

Commonly, in non-fiction there is an index at the end to allow readers to look at a collated list of topics that are contained within with page numbers where they are discussed, so the reader can go directly there without having to scan through the whole book each time. Books written in LaTeX can make use of the imakeidx package to generate the index.
